Thyristors - TRIACs are applications of load control, AC, DC and pulsed current control that are all utilized in many industrial systems and applications, either in a single or multiple element Form. The main components of a TRIAC system are a trigger, SCR, and control circuit.

A TRIAC application is generally composed of two basic components: the gate and the trigger. The gate is composed of semiconductor material and is used to control the duration and intensity of a current, while the trigger is composed of a 3- or 4-terminal unit and is used to control the voltage. The control circuit is composed of an oscillator and control logic units, which is used to control the running speed of the TRIAC.

The principle of operation of a TRIAC application is relatively simple; current is conducted via the initial activation of the SCR by applying a charge to the gate. A TRIAC will remain in the “on” state until the current drops below the hold-current level or until a counter-charge is applied to the gate. This will cause the TRIAC to shut off, thereby inhibiting current flow. This allows the user to control the duration and intensity of the current, as required.
