Thyristors - TRIACs are devices typically used for digital control applications where triggering is required. TRIACs are composed of two or more identical thyristors connected in inverse parallel with one anode connected to two cathodes, each thyristor connected with their own independent cathode. TRIACs offer higher current capability, higher nominal voltage, higher switching speed, and lower on-state voltage drop than conventional thyristors. TRIACs can be triggered from either the anode or either of the two cathodes, making it ideal for AC circuits with high power capacitive loading. The L0109DE application field and working principle is quite simple. The L0109DE is a four-quadrant logic level TRIAC with an integrated Zener diode and integrated gate terminal. The Zener diode allows the combinatorial signal to be applied directly to the gate of the TRIAC. The gate signal current is limited to a maximum of 200mA allowing digital control from a wide variety of integrated circuits, including microcontrollers and programmable logic controllers. In addition, the gate features an Anti-Parallel diode for enhanced protection, as well as a built-in LED for visual status indication.

The L0109DE features two different modes of operation, depending on the logic level at the gate terminal. In the first mode, if the gate voltage is below the set threshold voltage the TRIAC will remain off until the gate voltage is increased above the set threshold. In this mode the TRIAC will remain off until the gate voltage exceeds the threshold, at which point the TRIAC will then turn on and pass current. In the second mode, if the gate voltage is above the set threshold voltage the TRIAC will remain on and conduct current until the gate voltage is decreased below the set threshold voltage.

In both modes, the L0109DE can be triggered by either the anode or either of the two cathodes. The advantage of triggering by the cathode is that it supports systems with high power capacitive loading, because the triggering can be done quickly. When triggering by the anode, the thyristor works in an alternating mode, and thus has low switching speed but better regulation of power as current and voltage levels remain balanced.
