Thyristors - TRIACs

A Triac is a three-terminal semiconductor device that has similar functioning characteristics to that of the Thyristor. The three terminals of the Triac are labelled as Main Terminal (MT1), Gate (G) and Main Terminal 2 (MT2). This component works in both AC as well as DC voltage systems, and can be triggered in either short-circuit or open-circuit mode.

The most basic application of a Triac is for switching AC power at a certain frequency, and for controlling DC devices using an AC signal. It is used to switch a fixed frequency of AC current with the input of a single external trigger. The control input can be either an AC voltage or a DC voltage.

The L2004D3TP is a small-signal Triac, ideal for a variety of low-voltage AC and DC control applications. It is offered in packages that range from 5mm x 6mm to 8mm x 12mm in size. Working Principle

The L2004D3TP is a four layer semiconductor. The terminals MT1, MT2 and G are connected to four semiconductor layers: an Anode, a Main Terminal 2 (MT2), a Gate and a Main Terminal (MT1). The anode is connected to the Main Terminal 2, while the Gate terminal is connected to the Main Terminal. When a positive control voltage is applied to the Gate, the two layers that form the gate junction are biased in the forward direction and a current path between MT1 and MT2 is formed. This is known as the “On” state.

The current flow between MT1 and MT2 can be adjusted by varying the gate voltage. This is known as “phase control” and is used in a wide range of applications, such as motor speed control, fan dimmer control, temperature control and lighting control. When the Gate voltage is reversed, the current flow between MT1 and MT2 is blocked, known as the “Off” state.

Safety

One of the primary benefits of using Triacs is its safety. The Triac can be turned off at any time using the gate voltage, making it much safer than regular SCRs and thyristors. In the event of a current overload or short circuit, the Triac can be triggered off immediately, thus avoiding any overheating or risk of a fire.
