L2004V3TP Application field and Working Principle

The L2004V3TP is a three terminal symmetrical bidirectional thyristor (TRIAC). It is designed for use in applications where bidirectional switching, sensing, speed and current control, load switching and so on, are required. This TRIAC is specifically designed to support a variety of applications including lighting, individual signals, process control and HVAC applications.

The L2004V3TP is a very efficient device as it is able to handle current in either polarity. It offers continuous load current up to 8 A, repetitive peak off-state voltage up to 600 V, blocking voltage up to 800 V, on losses up to 1 mW and a low thermal resistance of <0.35°C/W.

The TRIACs main working principle is based upon two threshold voltages, Gate Trigger Voltage and Holding Voltage. It is triggered into the "ON" state with the application of a short-term AC or DC gate signal. When the gate signal is removed the device remains in the "ON" state until the applied main current MCR (Main Current Rating) of the device falls below the device holding voltage value.

The L2004V3TP has a low turn-on voltage, typically less than 2 V, which means it is not necessary to use additional external power supply, allowing energy savings and lower power consumption. Working in different frequencies, the device can start operating at rates as low as 45 Hz and as high as 2 kHz depending on the turn-on voltage.

As it is a symmetrical device, it is able to add independent, equal control of devices or line sides, allowing users to have the flexibility of controlling a number of devices or lines in parallel or in series. This is handy when making decisions about the level of protection required for each line side with the same setting.

In addition to this, the L2004V3TP is hermetically sealed and has a reinforced insulation system. This makes it suitable for use in more hazardous industrial environments and with higher voltages. It is also available in a variety of packages, from TO-220 to DIP and SMD.
