1. Application Fields

L4004D3RP is an optimized component for AC power control applications. It is particularly suitable for applications which require low energy access and high thermal endurance. Typical applications involve low voltage dimming devices such as fan dimmers, light dimmers, and other devices to control the power supply to the electric motor etc.

Moreover, the component has a wide operational temperature range, allowing it to be used in areas which require an ambient temperature of up to 150°C. It is also resistant to surge currents up to 125A, which allows the device to perform reliably in the presence of pulsed power circuits.

2. Working Principle

Triacs are based on the thyristors. Thyristors are a type of three-terminal semiconductor device used mainly for switching and controlling power signals including AC circuits. The salient feature of thyristors is that they can remain in either an non-conductive or conductive state, depending on their control signal.

The L4004D3RP triac comprises of two SCRs (silicon controlled rectifiers) connected in antiparallel and form three junctions. The two junctions are connected to the main terminals (MT1 and MT2). It’s other junction is called the Gate Terminal (GT). When a signal is applied to the Gate, it turns the triac into a current-controlling switch. In its "on-state" the triac will turn on and allow current to flow through the two SCRs. This allows it to control AC power signals with accuracy.

Therefore, the L4004D3RP triac can be used in applications that require current control and switching of AC power signals in a wide range of temperatures and environments.
