Thyristors - TRIACs
Thyristors, also known as Silicon-Controlled Rectifiers due to their control and rectification capabilities, are a group of semiconductor devices that can carry out switching, conduction, and turn-off operations. A TRIAC is a specific thyristor that consists of two independent thyristors connected in inverse parallel, with each side functioning as an independent device.
The L4004L5 thyristors are designed mainly for low voltage applications, such as power factor correction and motor control, and are intended for use in frequency converter, static switching, static frequency changer, static AC regulating, static 3-phase AC control, etc. Their non-availablility of current through the Gate pin make them suitable for low power AC switching.

This device operates under a single control signal and provides bidirectional current control since the Gate pin is common for both main terminals. This variable control signal applied to Gate determines the Turn-On voltage of the TRIAC, with the peak current capability being determined by gate triggering voltage. Lower gate signal levels generally ensure lower conduction losses.
The working principle of L4004L5 Thyristors is that it can be triggered with a positive or negative pulse applied to its Gate pin. When a positive electrical signal is applied to the GATE pin, the thyristor will turn on. This turning on process is essentially the junction between the anode and the cathode being forward biased. The current continues to flow through the thyristor until the signal is removed at which point, the thyristor turns off and the conducting channel is cut. Similarly, when a negative signal is applied to the GATE pin, the thyristor will again turn on, but with reversed polarities of the anode and cathode.
In terms of applications, the L4004L5 Thyristor can be used to provide efficient AC switching. It can be used, for example, to create AC power regulators, in which the output voltage is controlled by varying the firing angle at which the legs are triggered. A variable AC supply can be generated by controlling the firing angle, and this can be applied to AC motor speed controllers, where the motor speed is controlled by adjusting the firing angle of the thyristor.
The L4004L5 Thyristor can also be used as an AC switch and starter, where the on and off switching of the AC line can be achieved by controlling the Gate signal accordingly. It is also suitable for use in AC switching systems, such as those used in inductive and capacitive loads, where the gate signal can be varied to achieve the desired current flow.
