Thyristors - TRIACs: L4004V3 Application Field and Working Principle
Thyristors are a class of semiconductor components including silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), diac and triac. They are a special type of transistor, used extensively in power control and amplification circuits. The L4004V3 is one of the triac series. The L4004V3 is a thyristor composed of three layers: anode, gate and cathode. The two thyristor layers consist of a P-type semiconductor layer and an N-type semiconductor layer. At the beginning, the gate is kept open, leaving the anode and cathode terminals isolated from each other. When the gate is driven to the threshold voltage, an avalanche current flows between the anode and cathode, triggering the thyristor to perform its function. When the trigger gate of the L4004V3 is greater than the VGT (Gate Threshold Voltage) of the thyristor, a light trigger current is conducted to the anode and the thyristor enters the conduction stage. The anode and cathode are no longer isolated from each other. The thyristor then remains conducting during the period of applied voltage, regardless of the trigger gate voltage. The L4004V3 has built-in temperature protection and overvoltage protection features. The built-in temperature protection circuit disables the thyristor when the temperature of the device is higher than the rated temperature. And the overvoltage protection circuit disables the thyristor when the anode-cathode voltage exceeds the rated voltage. Conclusion
