As the core of contemporary embedded equipment, DC DC Switching Regulators are widely used in all aspects of electronic products. The L4975A from ST Microelectronics is a member of PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) family, and is specially designed for producing fixed, adjustable and enhanced-dynamic voltage regulator solutions for sophisticated applications.The L4975A integrated solution provides the combination of a high-current power switch and an accurate adjustable voltage regulator operating at an output voltage of 0.75V to 8V. It integrates a current mode PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) controller with a transconductance reference, and a N-Channel MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semi-conductor Field Effect Transistor) pass element with a load current capability up to 6A in a CSOP (Chip-Scale Packaged) package.
The main features of L4975A include low quiescent current, fast transient response, internal soft start and on-chip compensation. By using of PWM control, the L4975A is able to perform a constant output power conversion between the power source and a load. It is able to support applications with continuous loads over a wide range from no-load to full-load. This voltage regulator can be used for applications such as hard disk drive power supplies, computers, consumer electronics and communication systems.
The integrated power switch in L4975A is a N-channel MOSFET. The logic-level gate driver is able to support maximum gate drive with low voltage device. It also provides a logic signal to the logic block, which enables the system to monitor the transition states of the controlled device. Also, it integrates an adjustable voltage from 0.75V to 8V, which ensures accurate output voltage and provides improved transient response.
The Vref pin of this device can be connected to an external reference for monitoring the output voltage to ensure that it is always at the desired value. The L4975A is equipped with an internal soft start circuit for limiting the inrush current at start up. It also offers an enhanced dynamic response, which improves the transient response of the system by reducing the output voltage overshoot.
The on-chip compensation technique enables the user to make accurate adjustments to the output voltage, resulting in a high accuracy output voltage with a fast load transient response. Furthermore, its over-current protection provides protection against over current conditions by activating the overtemperature protection when the current reaches the over-current threshold.
The L4975A integrated solution is available in a CSOP package with a 0.65mm pitch and offers highly efficient current conversion solutions at minimal cost. Its low voltage switching operation, accurate voltage control and enhanced dynamic response features make it ideal for use in applications such as disk drive power supplies, computers and consumer electronics.
