Power Factor Correction (PFC) is becoming increasingly important in modern power electronics applications, from renewable energy systems to industrial, automotive and consumer electronics. The L4981BD is a cost-effective PMIC solution designed to optimize power factor correction in a range of electronic devices. Its features include a wide input voltage range of 2.2 V to 15 V, integrated over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection, low-ESR output capacitors, and ultra-low quiescent current consumption. In addition, the device includes the latest technology low-dropout regulator architectures, which allow it to achieve excellent power efficiency and topology flexibility.
The L4981BD operates by modulating the voltage of the power stage signal in order to match the shape of the input voltage waveform. This process is known as Active Power Factor Correction (APFC), and it allows the power stage signal to use the input voltage more efficiently.
