Power Factor Correction (PFC) is becoming increasingly important in modern power electronics applications, from renewable energy systems to industrial, automotive and consumer electronics. The ability to accurately and efficiently regulate power at the system level is a major factor in the overall efficiency, reliability and cost of the system. To this end, many Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) solutions have been developed, such as the L4981BD, to provide improved power factor correction with an optimal combination of performance, precision, and performance efficiency.

The L4981BD is a cost-effective PMIC solution designed to optimize power factor correction in a range of electronic devices. Its features include a wide input voltage range of 2.2 V to 15 V, integrated over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection, low-ESR output capacitors, and ultra-low quiescent current consumption. In addition, the device includes the latest technology low-dropout regulator architectures, which allow it to achieve excellent power efficiency and topology flexibility.

The L4981BD operates by modulating the voltage of the power stage signal in order to match the shape of the input voltage waveform. This process is known as Active Power Factor Correction (APFC), and it allows the power stage signal to use the input voltage more efficiently. As a result, this reduces the amount of power wasted in the power stage, resulting in an overall increase in power efficiency and a reduction in system cost.

In applications where higher power conversions are required, the L4981BD can be used in combination with other power management integrated circuits, such as the LDO4C25 and LDO4C29. By using this combination of devices, higher wattage conversion can be achieved, with improved power factor correction, lower EMI and improved current and voltage control.
