The NXP L4988D as a voltage regulator, was designed for precision and high stable voltage regulation applications. This linear regulator contains a high-side NMOSFET that pulls the regulated output voltage to a fixed setpoint. It supports input voltages as wide as 4.75 volts to 65 volts, as well as both high and low side N-channel MOSFETs to allow the precise voltage regulation of outputs with low resistor based power rails.

The output voltage is pin selectable via three analog input pins, and a monitor pin is provided which has a programmed output voltage configured between 0 and 2V.

The L4988D includes an initial offset capability, temperature range conditions, output current limit settings, and a 0.5µA/V output current versus output voltage slope as a function of load current. The L4988D also includes power-on reset capability, thermal shutdown for over temperature monitoring, and an adjustable reference slew rate.

Working Principle

The NXP L4988D is a high-side switch, with an internal sense field-effect transistor (FET) to control voltage output. When the voltage on the control pin put greater than a reference voltage, the internal FET is turned on, and the regulated output voltage is generated.

To ensure the robust performance, the device it also incorporates multiple protection features, such as output current limit, thermal shutdown, and an adjustable reference slew rate. The output current limit feature of the L4988D is adjustable to vary the maximum current that can flow through. It also has a thermal shutdown feature that will shut off the regulator in the event of an over temperature condition.
