PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) gate drivers are a kind of components used in electronic systems. It is made of several circuits, mainly consisting of an isolated gate driver, an input buffer and a power make/break switch, that work together to efficiently control power switching for DC/DC converters and other power management circuits. This article discusses the application field and working principle of the L6743 gate driver, which is a part of the STMicroelectronics STDRIVE gate driver family.

The L6743 is a low-side 3-channel gate driver designed to drive N-channel MOSFETs and IGBTs. Second, it features short propagation delay with a typical propagation delay of 11 ns. Finally, it has a low Vbat reverse leakage current that allows the gate driver to work even with a poorly regulated Vbat input.

The working principle of the L6743 can be divided into two main parts. The first part is the input buffer, which is used for accepting and conditioning the input signals. It features a push-pull stage with Schmitt trigger capabilities and fast transient response. This ensures that the signal is properly conditioned and that it will be properly interpreted by the logic circuit.

The second part is the logic circuit, which interprets the input signals and controls the output stages. The output stage consists of three channels, each including an adjustable delay circuit and level shifter that guarantees the needed rise and fall times to ensure safe switching of the MOSFETs or IGBTs.
