It is designed to be used as an adjustable (from 3V to 40V) Buck-Boost switching regulator and contains a built-in low-side MOSFET driver, enabling an application to work in buck or boost mode. The intended purpose of the L6920DTR is to provide a stable power supply output voltage and reliable protection against over-current and short-circuit. The working principle of the L6920DTR is based on the buck-boost topology where the output voltage is regulated by varying the duty cycle of charging period with respect to the basic switching frequency. The L6920DTR also has two output pins, Vout and FB, interconnected by an integrated low-side N-MOSFET. In the buck mode the current flows from Vin to Vout, while in boost mode it flows from VBoost to Vout. By controlling the duty-cycle of the switch, the device can regulate the output voltage to a set value. The feedback signal from the output is then sent through the FB pin back to the PWM block, so that the voltage can be maintained at the desired level. The L6920DTR integrates various protection features such as over-current protection (OCP), over-voltage protection (OVP) and under-voltage protection (UVP). The OCP circuit will automatically shut off the current flow whenever the load current surpasses a certain threshold, thus avoiding possible damage or destruction of the load. The OVP circuit will shut off the current flow when the output voltage reaches a level higher than the user-defined threshold. The UVP circuit will also detect a low output voltage level and shut off the current flow.
