The L7806CV is a popular three-terminal linear voltage regulator, belonging to a family of Integrated Circuit (IC) voltage regulators produced by STMicroelectronics. It is a three-terminal voltage regulator IC, supplying a fixed regulated output voltage of 6 volts, coming in the TO-220 package through-hole mounting configuration. The L7806CV has become a standard component in many modern electronics applications.
The maximum output of the L7806CV is 6 volts at 1.5 Amp, with an input voltage range from 7-35 volts. The voltage regulator is stable with 0.1 micro Farad capacitors for low ripple and noise output. It also has an internal thermal overload and short-circuit protection, with a non-locking tab to indicate power and short circuit conditions.

The working principle of the L7806CV can be simply explained with a few diagrams. The diagram on the left shows the voltage regulator with all of its components, including the input voltage source, the internal voltage divider, the comparator IC and the output voltage regulator. The diagram on the right shows how the IC operates to generate a regulated output voltage.
The input voltage, after passing through the voltage divider and the comparator, is compared to the voltage reference on the output voltage regulator. Depending on the voltage difference, the output voltage regulator adjusts the feedback loop to maintain the desired output voltage, usually 6 V.
The power dissipated during operation is also regulated in order to protect the L7806CV from overheating. If the current passing through the IC is higher than the power dissipation limit, the voltage regulator will stop operating and the output voltage will be pulled down to a level below the reference voltage. If the power dissipation limit is exceeded again, the voltage regulator will then switch off completely.
By taking the feedback loop into consideration, the L7806CV can effectively control the output voltage while avoiding the risk of excessive heat dissipation and maximizing the efficiency of the voltage regulator. This makes the L7806CV a very efficient and reliable component for many applications.
