L7809CD2T Application Field and Working Principle

Introduction

Working Principle

This dropout voltage is equal to the load current x dropout voltage (VDROP = IOUT x RDS(ON)) and cannot exceed 1.2 Volt for the L7809CD2T. If the load current is greater than 1.2V/RDS(ON), then the voltage drop will be greater than 1.2 Volts and the regulator will not be able to ensure the desired output voltage.

The L7809CD2T utilizes a Bipolar NPN transistor internally to regulate the output voltage. The transistor consists of two regions: the emitter and the collector, connected via the base. When a voltage is applied to the emitter, it causes current to flow from the emitter into the base. This current causes the transistor to switch off and the output voltage is regulated to the desired value. The L7809CD2T also contains protection circuitry to keep it from damaging itself from abnormal power or load conditions.
