L78LR05D-TL-E is a linear voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. It is designed to provide output voltages ranging between 2.7V and 5V from input voltages from 2V to 12V. This low drop-out linear regulator is built on CMOS technology for higher efficiency. Working Principle

The L78LR05D-TL-E is a linear voltage regulator. It works by using a series pass transistor to regulate the current flow between the input and output terminals. The series pass transistor, R2, is selected to have a gain of 10 to 20, so that its conducting level will vary with the control voltage, which is regulated by using a voltage divider network connected to the output of the regulator. This network produces a DC voltage proportional to the desired output voltage. The R2 series pass transistor then switches according to this voltage, regulating the amount of current allowed to flow from the input to the output. By controlling the level of current, the output voltage is maintained at the desired level.

To protect against over-current and over-temperature conditions, the L78LR05D-TL-E is designed with a built in current limiting and thermal shutdown circuit. This circuit monitors the load current, and if it exceeds 6A the internal current limit circuit will shut down the output until the load is removed. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors the junction temperature and will shut down the output if the junction temperature exceeds 150°C.
