Working principle

The L78S75CV-DG is a three terminal positive voltage regulator with a fixed or adjustable output voltage. It features an active current limiter, thermal overload protection and reverse-polarity protection. Specifically, the device’s active current limiter prevents output current overload and shut down the voltage regulator in case of an overload. In addition, it has an internal thermal overload protection that increases the junction temperature in case of an overload.

The working principle of the L78S75CV-DG can be described as follows. The device compares a reference voltage to the input voltage and adjusts the output voltage accordingly. Its output is regulated by varying the transconductance of an internal NPN pass transistor. In normal operation, this pass transistor is biased into conduction in order to maintain the output voltage of the device. In the event of an overload, the pass transistor is biased such that the output current is limited, resulting in a drop in output voltage.
