Application field: The application field of the LC70A is wide and encompasses transient protection in low-voltage systems such as the automotive industry, consumer electronics, telecoms, and computers. In automotive applications, these devices are usually used to protect circuits against load dump, power surge, or voltage spikes.

Working Principle: The working principle of the LC70A is based on the avalanche breakdown principle. This principle states that when the applied voltage across a semiconductor junction exceeds a certain value (called the breakdown voltage), the electric field in the junction reaches a critical value and electrons can gain sufficient energy to be able to cross an energy barrier and enter the conductive state of the junction. This, in turn, creates a large amount of current, thus creating a breakdown of the junction.

The operation of the LC70A can be further understood if it is divided into two distinct modes. The first mode is the off-state mode. This refers to the normal operation of the device when no surge or overvoltage events take place. In the off-state mode, the forward voltage drop of the LC70A is negligible and the device carries no load current.

The second mode is the on-state mode. This is the clamped or conducting mode of the device. In this mode, the LC70A is designed to clamp the surge or overvoltage event to its own breakdown voltage, thus limiting the voltage across the protected devices. This, in turn, prevents them from getting damaged.
