TVS – Diodes

TVS diodes, also known as transient voltage suppressor (TVS) devices, are unidirectional semiconductor devices that protect electronic circuits from voltage surges and transients. TVS diodes are routinely used in most electronic equipment, from consumer electronics to industrial applications, that might face unexpected voltage spikes.

The LDP01-39AY series is a popular TVS diode from Littelfuse Corporation. It is based on their SiC (silicon carbide) technology. This series offers excellent protection from high voltage transients. It provides superior low voltage clamping performance and low capacitance to maximize ESD protection from over-voltage transients.

Application Field

Working Principle

In order to understand how this type of TVS diode works, it is important to understand the principle of how the diode works. When the voltage in the circuit increases past the breakdown voltage of the device, the diode begins to conduct and limits the voltage across it. This allows the current to be diverted away from the sensitive component and dissipated. By doing so, it prevents the voltage from rising too high and damaging the sensitive components.

The LDP01-39AY series can limit voltage rise to about 18V typically, and has a peak pulse power dissipation of 3A (8/20μs). The device can operate over a temperature range from -55°C to 125°C and has a breakdown voltage of 12V. In addition to this, it has a low capacitance of 1.4pF, which helps reduce the electromagnetic interference (EMI) during the surge event.
