LE33CZ is a voltage regulator from National Semiconductor with a wide range of applications and a very simple but effective working principle.It is part of a larger family of low-drop voltage regulators, also known as low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulators. They are units of integrated circuits which provide the output voltage similar to the input voltage, however, with higher currents and stability. This type of operation works particularly well when the device is running at a relatively high power, with some measure of voltage either dropping or increasing depending on the desired output.The main purpose of the LE33CZ is to regulate power by providing a constant output voltage in spite of fluctuations in the input voltage. Consequently, these types of regulators are widely used in electronic systems that may be subject to even substantial changes of input voltage level, such as an automotive system running from a 12V battery.The chip consists of a series of pass transistors that are designed to maintain a fixed voltage on the output. The transistors are internally connected to sense the voltage on the output and then drive a current through a resistor in order to reduce the output voltage back to the preset value. This regulation or feedback loop is known as the error amplifier and is the core of the working mechanism of the LE33CZ. The series connection of the pass transistors presents an unusually small voltage drop in the output. This drop, defined as the dropout voltage, is significant because it affects the current passing through the circuit. The lower the dropout voltage, the higher the load current passing through the regulator while still maintaining a stable and constant output voltage. For example, the LE33CZ features a 230mV max dropout voltage at 1A load current, while in comparison a generic CMOS voltage regulator might have a 530mV max dropout voltage at the same load.The LE33CZ has the advantage of being able to provide the full 1A with relatively low power dissipation; this is due to a low quiescent current that it draws from the input power, enabling the device to dissipate power only inversely proportional to the load current. The current limitation feature prevents substantial current from overloading the device if the load increases suddenly, such as if a short or malfunction occurs. The LE33CZ can be used for plenty of applications that require a reliable low-drop voltage regulator. For instance, it is highly suitable for automotive systems, such as inverter and charging modules in hybrid electric vehicles, associated electronic control units, and LED lighting systems.
