Introduction

The LF25CV is a linear voltage regulator designed to provide power supply circuits with stable and accurate voltage outputs, a converted supply voltage and an adjustable current limit. The LF25CV, available in both positive and negative output versions, is an economical solution when a simple, integrated, low-cost and high-accuracy regulator is needed.

Working Principle

The basic function of the LF25CV is to regulate the output voltage to a fixed value in spite of changes in the output load and input voltage. The LF25CV features an integrated circuit with a voltage reference, an error amplifier, a pass transistor and a series pass element. The output of the internal voltage reference module is compared with the voltage of the output pass element, which is pushed through the pass transistor. The result of this comparison is the input to the error amplifier module. This module produces an output signal that is fed to the base terminal of the pass transistor. It corrects the current of the pass transistor at the base so that the regulated voltage remains constant even if particulars such as the output current and the input voltage change.The output current of the LF25CV can be limited with an external resistor. When the current passes from the output terminal to the ground reaches the set current limit, the voltage of the current limiting resistor goes lowers, recucing the gain of the error amplifier and turn into the linear region decreasing the output current. The LF25CV also features protection against thermal and over current overload conditions. If a thermal or overload overload situation occurs, the regulator interrupts its operation until the fault condition is removed and the circuit returns to normal operation.
