Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are electronic components that store energy in the form of a charge. They are constructed of two metal plates separated by an electrolyte, which is usually a liquid or a gel. The plates are typically made of aluminum, due to its high electrical conductivity and low cost. The electrolyte serves as an insulator, preventing the metal plates from contacting and shorting out the capacitor. Depending on the type of electrolyte used, the capacitor may have a higher or lower ESR (equivalent series resistor). The capacitance of the capacitor is determined by the area, the thickness and the permittivity of the dielectric material used, as well as the distance between the two plates.
The LGN2Z122MELC30 aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a low-ESR, axial-leaded type. It has an operating temperature range of –40°C to +105°C and is rated for a capacitance of 1,200µF. The maximum rated voltage of this type is 25Vdc. Due to the low ESR and low leakage current, it is suitable for applications which require long life and high reliability. It is widely used in switch mode power supplies, LED lighting, power back up systems and other high reliability applications.
The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the phenomenon of electrolysis. In this process, an electric current is passed through an electrolyte, which then breaks down the chemical bonds between the aluminum anode (positive plate) and the cathode (negative plate). This process causes an increase in the capacitance of the capacitor. The current also causes an accumulation of charges on the plates, thereby increasing the potential difference between them. When an external voltage is connected to the capacitor, the potential difference causes a flow of current through it which is proportional to the applied voltage.
The amount of current that can flow through the capacitor is limited by its ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance). The ESR determines the rate at which the capacitor charges or discharges. The leakage current of the capacitor is also a factor in determining its life expectancy. In general, a lower ESR and a lower leakage current will result in a longer capacitor life.
