Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are energy-storing capacitors with a very large capacitance per unit volume. It uses the physical characteristics of anodic oxidation film formed on the surface of aluminum foil as the medium and electrode material. It has the advantages of long life, large capacity, low leakage current, large withstand voltage, high insulation resistance and small size. It has a wide range of applicable occasions and has become a reliable working power in the most basic applications.

The LGN2Z272MELC50 aluminum electrolytic capacitor is a non-polarized electrolytic aluminum capacitor, with a capacitance of 2700 uF, a voltage rating of 25 volts and an operating temperature range of -55 to +85 degrees Celsius. It has an electrolyte solution of low-viscosity polyethylene oxide, a positive and negative lead wire soldering lead temperature rating of 250°C and a rated ripple current of 1.3A.

Working Principle of LGN2Z272MELC50 Capacitor

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor has two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, made of aluminum foil. The anode is typically formed in sheets that are rolled and insulated from each other and from the environment, known as “elecrolytic” material. The cathode is usually made up of an aluminum oxide layer on the surface of the aluminum foil.

The capacitor voltage rating is determined by the thickness of the oxide layer and the applied voltage will determine the breakdown voltage of the oxide layer. Somehow, since the oxide layer itself is an insulator, a higher voltage will cause the capacitor to short-circuit and thus, the capacitor should not be used above its rated maximum voltage.

When the capacitor is connected in an application, the anode material will take electrons out of the electrolytic solution and give them to the elephant’s gate while the cathode material will add electrons to the solution from the elephant cage. This will create a differential charge on the capacitor, which will act to oppose any further change in the applied voltage.
