Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors (AECs) are used to store and deliver electrical energy. They are commonly found in electronic circuits and are used in many applications from power supplies, motor control systems, high-voltage power systems, to portable electronics.The LGY1J822MELC45 is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor and is designed to be used in exact power supplies, across-the-line motor starters, and power factor correction circuits. This model is rated for a maximum voltage of16 Volts DC and a maximum capacitance of 220 micro-Farads.When used in an electronic circuit, AECs can store electrical energy and deliver it in bursts depending on the application. As the voltage increases, the capacitance of the LGY1J822MELC45 increases and more energy can be stored. The capacitance of the capacitor is changed by adjusting the distance between the two electrodes.AECs are composed of two metal plates. The plates should not be electrically connected. One plate is made of aluminum foil and this acts as the cathode. The other plate is usually made of a conductive polymer or paper and it acts as the anode. The aluminum plate is the outer foil and the conductive material is placed between the two foils. The conductive material is usually impregnated with electrolytic fluid; this helps to ionize the material and increase its conductivity.The operation of the LGY1J822MELC45 is based on Faraday’s law of induction. When an electric potential is applied across the terminals of the capacitor, electrons from the anode plate are attracted to the aluminum foil on the other side. This causes the anode material to be pulled away from the aluminum foil. This increase in distance between the anode and the aluminum foil decreases the capacitance of the capacitor. As the electric potential is increased, the distance between the two plates increases even more and thus the capacitance is decreased even further.The LGY1J822MELC45 is designed for use in exact power supplies, across-the-line motor starters and power factor correction circuits. It is designed to handle temperatures ranging from -55° C to +125° C and is available in surface mount and through-hole packages.
