LM20146MHX/NOPB is a monolithic DC/DC switching regulator designed to provide up to 3A typical continuous output current over an output voltage range of 1.5V to 5.5V. In addition, the device includes Auxiliary Output for 1.5V to 5V operation at up to 500mA. Developed using National’s advanced BiCMOS process and proprietary switched capacitor technology, this device is optimized for low noise applications and incorporates a variable frequency, current-mode architecture for improved transient response and line regulation. It also contains a voltage error amplifier, a high-side MOSFET switch, a low-side MOSFET switch, frequency compensation, soft-start, and internal current limiting. Advanced features such as the proprietary Dynamic Peak Current Limiting and an adjustable Under-voltage Lockout (UVLO) ensure a pleasant user experience and optimal device protection. The LM20146MHX/NOPB is available in an easily mountable and thermally efficient 10-Lead VDFN (3mm x 3mm x 0.8mm) package and is ideally suited for a wide range of high-current and space-constrained applications such as Notebooks, Tablets, and Handhelds.

Working Principle
The LM20146MHX/NOPB is a monolithic DC/DC switching converter that is designed to provide up to 3A typical continuous output current over an output voltage range of 1.5V to 5.5V. It includes an Auxiliary Output for up to 1.5V to 5V operation at up to 500mA. The device operates using a variable frequency, current-mode architecture for improved transient response and line regulation with an adjustable pulse-width-modulated (PWM) switching frequency, adjustable over-voltage protection, and a temperature-compensated voltage error amplifier.
In operation, the LM20146MHX/NOPB uses the voltage error amplifier to make voltage comparisons between the device’s output voltage and the reference voltage. When the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the error amplifier will drive a high-side power MOSFET, turning it off and preventing current from entering the output. When the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the error amplifier will drive the high-side power MOSFET, turning it on and allowing current to enter the output. This process is repeated at the switching frequency provided to the device.
The device also features a low side MOSFET switch and an internal current limit that allows the LM20146MHX/NOPB to be used in applications up to 3A and with an output voltage range from 1.5V to 5.5V. Additionally, the device includes a soft-start time-out circuit, which prevents inrush current during start-up and reduces output voltage overshoot. Lastly, it includes an adjustable Under-voltage Lockout (UVLO) for improved power control, as well as a proprietary Dynamic Peak Current Limiting circuit for improved device protection.
