The LM21212-1EVM application field and working principle can be divided into three different categories. These consist of DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) switch mode power supplies (SMPS), linear voltage regulator (LVRs) and DC/DC boost converters.DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS:Switch mode power supplies (SMPS) are used to regulate the voltage input from one source to the precise levels needed by the electronic device. They are a cost-effective and efficient means of transmitting power.The LM21212-1EVM is a 3.3V SMPS for AC and DC applications. It features an adjustable switching frequency ranging from 1000kHz to 2000kHz, which allows the user to optimize their system for efficiency or power output requirements. The evaluation board also comes with pre-programmed values for stand-alone oscillator operation, high/low load operation, as well as variable frequency control options. The power supply can be used to supply a single device (with up to 1A current drawn) or several devices (1 A with several low power devices supplying a max total current of 2.5 A).Linear Voltage Regulator (LVRs):Linear voltage regulators (LVRs) use a controlled variable voltage source to produce a constant and stable output voltage despite fluctuations in the input voltage. It features an adjustable switching frequency ranging from 200kHz to 1000kHz, allowing users to optimize their system for power efficiency or output power requirements.The LM21212-1EVM evaluation board comes pre-programmed with values and settings for a range of voltages, currents and output load ranges. The regulator can be used to provide power to up to two outputs simultaneously. The board also includes a protection circuitry, which prevents the board from overheating or experiencing overpowering conditions.DC/DC Boost Converters:DC/DC boost converters are used to regulate the incoming voltage to desirable levels and to also augment the power comprised within off-line and on-line systems. This type of converter is ideal for applications which require higher power than the voltage input can provide.The LM21212-1EVM Evaluation Board comes pre-programmed with values and settings for boost converters. It also contains a LED that provides a visual feedback of the operating status of the board. The board uses an adjustable switching frequency ranging from 200kHz to 2000kHz and includes a demultiplexer for providing an adjustable output voltage up to 15V.Overall, the LM21212-1EVM Application board is an effective and reliable means of providing power to a range of devices.
