Texas Instruments (TI) offers a line of point-of-load devices that enable systems designers to reduce the number of voltage regulators, simplify design, and improve efficiency. The LM2674M-3.3 is a wide input voltage range, synchronous step down DC-DC converter that operates over a wide 1.2 V to 5.5 V input voltage range and provides a regulated 3.3 V output voltage over a wide 0.5 A to 3 A range of output current. The device delivers a maximum efficiency of up to 90% at nominal load and offers up to 95% efficiency at light loads.

The LM2674M-3.3 provides flexibility to meet demanding requirements. It has a built-in soft start circuitry that can be switched between fast and slow start depending on the application. The device also offers size and incremental performance advantages over many competing solutions by integrating a synchronous buck switch controller, power switches, compensation components, foldback protection, and a synchronous rectifier, all in the same chip.

Working Principle

The device acts as a voltage regulator, working on the principal of a DC-DC regulator. In this type of regulator, a switching element, usually a MOSFET, alternately turns on and off at a fixed rate while charging and discharging the output capacitors on the secondary side. This controlled switching process reduces the input voltage to the level required at the output. The input and output voltages need to be monitored to ensure that they do not exceed the minimum or the maximum levels.

The LM2674M-3.3 offers four different fixed switching frequencies (100 kHz, 200 kHz, 400 kHz, and 800 kHz). It is fully protected by both hiccup current-limit and foldback protections. This ensures accurate current limit at all times, avoiding damage to the device and other components. The power switches are N-channel MOSFETs that are controlled by an internal switch controller. The synchronous rectifier is of the low-side type, allowing the use of the most often employed low-side N-channel MOSFETs while using low-cost, ultra-low R_DS(ON) inductors. This helps to maximize design flexibility and allows the device to achieve its high power capability and efficiency.
