LM2678SD-12 Application Field and Working Principle
The LM2678SD-12 is a 3.3V input, synchronous buck voltage regulator designed for high output current applications. It operates at an input voltage of 3.0V to 5.5V, also allowing for higher output current in low input voltage conditions. This high-performance device incorporates various power-saving features and its output current can be manually adjusted up or down. Its core features include: low quiescent current (120 uA), low voltage dropout (260mV typical) at full load, wide input voltage range (3.0V to 5.5V), integrated MOSFET switches and a low impedance contact point on its output pin.The LM2678SD-12 belongs to the group of PMIC (Power Management ICs) or what is sometimes referred to as voltage regulators, more specifically it is a DC/DC (direct current to direct current) switching regulator. Its primary purpose is to take an input voltage, such as 3.3V from a battery, and convert it to a desired output voltage, such as 1.8V for powering circuits in a given system.At its very basic, the LM2678SD-12 operates by using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the time for which the switch is on and off. This effectively controls the average output voltage, known as the duty cycle. The potentiometer located on the board can be used to adjust the output voltage by adjusting the PWM signal. This method is more efficient than linear methods, since linear methods waste energy as heat.The LM2678SD-12 offers a high degree of flexibility to its user so they can customize the settings and power their design requirements. The adjustable output voltage can range from 0.6V to 5.2V, with an accuracy of ±1%. The switching frequency can also be adjusted between 300 kHz and 1.2MHz. This enables designers to customize their designs and also allows for reducing overall power consumption as higher frequencies lead to faster switching, resulting in lower power losses.The device features integrated MOSFETs which allow for higher power densities and lower product costs. Not only that, the device also has low quiescent current and less capacitor noise, which makes it more suitable for battery-powered applications.
