On the left side of the diagram is the input voltage V_in, in this case 9V. The input voltage is then stored in the storage capacitor, C_1. AN input diodes is placed before the capacitor ensures that the input voltage is only discharged when the switch is off, reducing the power dissipation to a minimum.The switch is placed between the inductor, L, and ground. When this switch is closed, the current in the inductor begins to increase, which is symbolized by the curved arrow on the component. This increase in current is proportional to the change in voltage. The voltage at any point in the circuit can be expressed as the sum of the current multiplied by the inductor value and the input voltage.When the switch is opened, the stored energy in the inductor is then released through the output diode, into the output load.
