The principal of operation of the LM285Z/NOPB is based upon an internal differential amplifier, working in combination with a Zener diode. This diode is connected in reverse bias, forming a stable reference voltage. The two terminals of the device (in- and output) are then connected to the non-inverting and inverting pins of the amplifier. An internal bandgap reference adjusts the internal reference voltage and load compensation is provided by the output buffer amplifier.
The output voltage of the device is set by an externally connected resistor divider and is nominally 3V. A precision offset pin is provided to enable adjustment of the output voltage over a wide range. The device is also capable of regulating the output voltage over a wide range of loads, from 1 mA up to 2.5A.The LM285Z/NOPB has an extremely low quiescent current - typically just 1 mA - and can operate with very low dropout voltages - as low as 5mV across its full output range.
