The LM3102EVAL is an evaluation board designed for evaluating the performance of the LM3102 Buck-Boost AC/DC Controller for Off-Line Switch Mode Power Supplies. It is a versatile platform for evaluating the features, performance, and behavior of the LM3102 Control IC for a wide range of applications. The board is also able to simulate real-world SMPS in a laboratory or application test bed.
The LM3102EVAL board is designed to bring out and highlight the features and performance of the LM3102 controller, which is a highly integrated 60V Buck-Boost DC/DC controller for high-efficiency power supplies. The device is designed to satisfy any universal AC/DC system application where the output voltage must be adjustable over a wide range of output voltages with high efficiency. The IC supports up to 93% efficiency and is ideal for applications such as adapter, battery chargers, and LED drivers.
The LM3102 is an isolated current-mode controller with integrated high-side and low-side drivers that support a wide input line operating range of 90VAC to 265VAC and up to 4 outputs with a maximum power of 180W. Other features include integrated secondary-side feedback, overvoltage protection, load current regulation, adjustable soft-start, pre-biased output startup, and temperature sensing.
The LM3102EVAL is designed to emulate a real-world off-line adapter using the LM3102 controller. The evaluation board provides the means to evaluate the LM3102 controller, which supports the following functions:

- High efficiency up to 93%

This evaluation board contains all the necessary components required to simulate an off-line ac/dc application. The board has an isolated, floating input section as well as an isolated, floating output section. The input voltage can be adjusted using the external input voltage selector switch, and the operating frequency is set using the external potentiometer. The LM3102EVAL evaluation board consists of several functional blocks, the most important of which are summarized.
Input Transient Protection Circuitry: The LM3102EVAL includes comprehensive input protection circuitry to protect it from any transient voltage spikes that may be present on the AC line. This protects the LM3102 controller and other components from overvoltage and overcurrent risks.
Soft Start: The LM3102 Evaluation Board includes an adjustable soft start feature to reduce the inrush current on system startup and minimize any potential damage to the power supply or the load. The soft start time can be adjusted using the on-board potentiometer.
Stabilization and control circuitry: The LM3102EVAL contains a control loop to regulate the output voltage and adjust the output current to maintain the output voltage. This loop consists of an error amplifier, current sense amplifier and compensation network. The error amplifier controls the amount of duty cycle applied to the MOSFETs, while the current sense amplifier measures the output current and provides feedback to the error amplifier. The gain and phase of the control loop can be adjusted via the external compensation network.
Over/Under Voltage Protection: The LM3102 Control IC includes an over-voltage and under-voltage protection circuit to ensure that the output voltage does not exceed the maximum/minimum voltage limit. This protection circuit limits the voltage so that the output voltage remains stable and efficient during normal operation.
Load Current Regulation: The LM3102 Evaluation Board includes a load current regulation circuit, which is used to limit the output current during heavy loads. This circuit ensures that the output voltage remains stable and efficient to ensure optimal performance during operation.
Power Factor Correction: The LM3102EVAL includes an optional Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit to improve efficiency and reduce input current distortion. This PFC circuit ensures that the input current waveform is sinusoidal and prevents the input current from exceeding the power supply\'s maximum input current limit.
