A LM317LCD integrated circuit (IC) is one of the most important and versatile monolithic integrated circuits used in regulating the output voltage over a wide range of current levels. Primarily used in situations in which variable output voltage is needed, the LM317LCD is popularly utilized in switching power converters, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and small audio systems. The LM317LCD Working Principle
The LM317LCD can be constructed with or without output current limit. When it features an output current limit, it consists of an input impedance, a stable reference, and a series amplifier circuit, as well as an output impedance and an output voltage amplifier. The input impedance is a resistor which, along with the regulator IC, acts as an attenuator, allowing an input signal to pass through it into the amplifier and, eventually, get output from the IC. The feedback from the voltage regulator IC is directed towards the amplifier, which is connected to the reference voltage, and this reference voltage is used to tune the output voltage to match the input voltage.
The regulator also features a Thermistorm Control System which, when triggered, turns on the control transistor. The output of the regulator can then be adjusted with the help of a tuning capacitor, if necessary, depending on the type of application.
