LM331N is a monolithic integrated voltage to frequency converter and frequency to voltage converter capable of providing highly linear analog output over a wide frequency and voltage range. This integrated converter includes high gain bandwidth stages with unique circuit design due to its fast rise and fall times, low offset voltage, and high stability against temperature variation. The LM331N voltage to frequency converter is suitable for most data acquisition system applications and is easy to use and debug.

This part contains a linear amplifier with current feedback, precision voltage references, and a voltage to frequency converter which converts the voltage gain of the linear amplifier into a frequency output. The amplifier can be used to provide I/O signal conversion from many sources with a large gain linearity. This makes the LM331N ideal for accurate, high-speed Voltage to frequency conversion and Frequency to Voltage conversion in applications such as robotic motion control, motion control systems, signal conditioning, signal processing, and other data acquisition applications requiring accuracy and precision.

The LM331N voltage to frequency converter features an input voltage range of 0 to 14V, a frequency resolution of 0.1kHz/V, and a frequency stability of 0.1% over the full temperature range of -25°C to +150°C. It also features an output voltage range of 0 to 5V, a resolution of 0.04V/kHz, and a low offset voltage of 1.5mV. The LM331N converter is fully self-contained and does not require additional active circuitry for operation. This converter operates from dual power supplies, single-ended or split supplies, or a combination of both depending on the application requirements.

The internal operation of the LM331N is fairly simple. The input voltage is applied to the input terminal, which is converted to a current and applied to the feedback resistor. This current is then fed back through an adjustable-gain stage to the linear amplifier, which provides the output voltage. The output voltage is then applied to the voltage to frequency converter, which converts the voltage gain into a frequency output. The frequency output is then applied to the adjustable-gain stage which can be used to adjust the output frequency to the desired range.
