The LM337 is a three-terminal adjustable voltage regulator that is designed to provide an output voltage negative of the reference voltage. Its operation is similar to the LM317, which is an adjustable positive voltage regulator. The LM337 is a voltage reference chip that generates a negative output voltage that is lower than the reference voltage. This device is designed for use with a ±5 V reference and a maximum output current of 1 A. The LM337 has three terminals; the input voltage, output voltage, and adjust terminals. The input voltage is applied to the input terminal while the output voltage is taken from the output terminal. The adjust terminal is used to adjust the output voltage. When the adjust terminal is connected to the output terminal, no current flows through the adjust pin, meaning the output voltage is equal to the reference voltage. When the adjust terminal is connected to the input terminal, the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage. The output voltage will vary with changes in the input voltage, temperature, and the value of the externally connected resistor. The LM337 is designed to draw only a minimal amount of quiescent current from the input voltage source, allowing it to be used in battery-powered applications. In addition, the LM337 features built-in thermal overload protection to prevent damage from overheating.
