Evaluation Boards - LED Drivers: LM3410XSDSEPEV Application Field and Working PrincipleThe LM3410XSDSEPEV is an evaluation board comprising surface mount LEDs, driver/controller, and on/off control switches. This evaluation board targets mainly automotive, portable electronic device, and communication system applications. It features three channels of LED driver/controller and a DC-DC converter for driving cold white LED applications. It is a great way to evaluate LED driver capabilities, including PWM dimming.It is designed to work with an adjustable input voltage range of 2.4V to 5.5V and supports up to 8 LEDs for each channel in constant current mode. The 3-channel LED controller can be used for a number of configurations, such as multiple strings of LEDs, in series for applications requiring higher currents or in parallel for higher brightness applications. The LM3410XSDSEPEV board also features a PWM input with an adjustable frequency of 20 kHz, 32 kHz, and 56 kHz, allowing it to be used in different applications.The LM3410XSDSEPEV board employs switching regulators to provide the currents necessary to drive the LEDs. The switching regulator is used to convert a fixed voltage input power into adjustable output current. The switching regulator can be run in either a linear mode or a push-pull mode.In linear mode, the switch is always in an ON or OFF state and the current is regulated by varying the duty cycle of the ON state. This results in an output current that has minimal ripple. It is well suited for applications that require a high degree of accuracy.In push-pull mode, the switch will periodically transition between the ON and OFF states. This results in an output current ripple that is proportional to the duty cycle of the ON state. This configuration is well suited for systems that require fast response time.The LM3410XSDSEPEV board also has a programmable switching frequency. The switching frequency can be adjusted between 300kHz and 1.4kHz. This allows the user to optimize the setting for specific applications.The LM3410XSDSEPEV board also comes with a built-in thermal protection system to protect the LED driver/controller from overheating. This is particularly important in applications that require higher power LEDs.The LM3410XSDSEPEV evaluation board is a great way to evaluate LED driver performance and understand the differences between linear and push-pull mode operation.
