LM3431QMHX/NOPB: PMIC - LED Drivers

The LM3431QMHX/NOPB integrated PWM controller is specially designed for driving LEDs. It integrates an oscillator, internal metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) field-effect transistor (FET) power switch, precise current reference and current sense and control circuit, high-voltage MOSFET, and various protections. It provides LED drivers with adjustable LED current, adjustable LED brightness, temperature protection and open LED protection. The reversible input voltage range at the load is from 3 V to 50 V, while the peak current (Ipeak) can be up to 2 A. The LM3431QMHX/NOPB also features high switch current, allowing for a larger LED light strip.

LM3431QMHX/NOPB Bank:

The LM3431QMHX/NOPB has four banks, namely Bank1, Bank2, Bank3 and Bank4. Each bank has its own independent control circuit and implements independent current control of the LEDs. Therefore, LM3431QMHX/NOPB can control four individual LEDs or four different strings of strings of LEDs. It can also be used to power a remote current source. The maximum output current of each bank is up to 250mA and the dimming range of each bank is 0-100%. Bank1 is used to set the current mode, while bank 2 to 4 are used to output current and brightness control set by Bank1. The load can also be controlled by external terminal in series.

LM3431QMHX/NOPB Working Principle:

The working principle of LM3431QMHX/NOPB can be divided into four steps. Firstly, the internal oscillator generates a carrier signal with a default frequency of 1MHz. The frequency can be locked to a value lower than 1MHz by adjusting the RT pin. Then the carrier signal modulates the power MOSFET to control the LED current. Secondly, the internal current sense and programming circuit detects the voltage across a single inductor and adjusts the output current accordingly. When the current changes, the brightness also changes accordingly. Thirdly, the controller monitors the temperature of the power MOSFET, and improves the efficiency of the power MOSFET by activating the thermal protection circuit. Lastly, an open LED protection circuit is integrated to protect the LEDs from open-circuit fault when connected in series.
