The LM3481-FLYBACKEVM, or flyback evaluation module, is an evaluation board designed to provide a quick and easy evaluation of the features and performance of the LM3481 Synchronous Flyback Controller. This DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS converter operates over an input voltage range of 16V to 68V and can deliver up to 10W of output power. It makes use of a transformer-based flyback topology with ultra-low quiescent current and is capable of operating with 4% to 95% load range.

The main features of the LM3481-FLYBACKEVM include a wide input voltage range of 16V to 68V, over temperature and overload protection, an adjustable output voltage of 3.3V to 15V, soft start, short circuit protection, and adjustable soft start and current limit protection. The LM3481-FLYBACKEVM also features an advanced active transient response and is capable of delivering up to 10W of output power.

The board includes the main controller IC, the LM3481, as well as additional components for the power output stages. The evaluation board also features a current sensing resistor, as well as an additional switch for the output power stages. The board includes safety protection circuits for over temperature, over current, and short circuit protection.

The working principle of the board is quite simple. When the input voltage is applied, the LM3481 begins working and its output is passed through a driver stage to the power output stage. The driver stage is responsible for switching the power output stage on and off, and modulating the output voltage. The current sensing resistor monitors the current flowing through the power output stage. If the output current reaches the maximum allowable limit, the LM3481 will switch off the power output stage and the output voltage will be set to zero.

The board also features a thermal protection circuit which activates when the internal temperature of the board rises above a certain level. This protects the board and its components from damage caused by overheating. Additionally, the board is designed with an adjustable soft start sequencer. This helps to limit inrush current and prevents the power output stages from switching on too quickly, which can cause excessive current demand and noisiness.

The LM3481-FLYBACKEVM flies back the output voltage with the help of a transformer and is capable of operating over a 4% to 95% load range. It can be used for a wide variety of applications, including telecom and industrial, automotive, medical, and audio applications.
