The LM3433EVALKIT is an evaluation board developed to showcase the advanced features of the LM3433 LED Driver IC. This application note discuses the application field of the LM3433EVALKIT and its working principle.
Application Field
The LM3433EVALKIT is designed for lighting engineers, LED designers, LED manufacturers, LED system designers, and LED lighting OEMs to evaluate the LM3433 LED Driver IC. The device is intended for implementations up to 500 mA of total output current per IC. It is suitable for driving a variety of LEDs in automotive and general illumination applications, including lighting fixtures, streetlights, and MR16 light bulbs. The device is also useful for driving low-power LCD displays, and for applications with multiple string control. The LM3433EVALKIT offers a wide range of features. It is designed to simultaneously power and control up to four LEDs. It also supports flexible dimming, color mixing, and sequencing functions. The device is able to automatically regulate the number of LEDs powered, which allows the system to automatically adjust the output current for maximum efficiency. These features make it well-suited for applications that require multiple LEDs and precise control over the level of output power.Working Principle
The LM3433EVALKIT is based on a Flyback conversion topology and uses a full bridge active switch to regulate the current. The LM3433 LED Driver IC draws in and regulates AC power. The Flyback topology is a switching converter that employs an inductor and capacitors to store and transfer energy between input and output stages. During operation, the bridge rectifier converts the AC power supply into a DC signal. The signal is then switched using the active switch in a linear PWM (pulse width modulation) mode. This transfers the delivered DC power to the output stage and drives the LEDs. During the switching period, the current flowing through the inductor is sensed by the LM3433EVALKIT and uses this information to regulate the current to the LEDs. The LM3433EVALKIT is also able to measure the output voltage and the input current and display them on the LCD screen. The LM3433EVALKIT also features a temperature monitoring system that helps regulate the output current and prevents the device from being overloaded. As the current increases, the temperature of the LED driver IC increases which results in power loss. The device is able to measure this temperature and switch off the LED upon reaching a predefined maximum.
