The LM3485LED EVAL is an evaluation board of LED drivers. It is produced by Texas Instruments and has a wide range of applications. This board contains a variety of components to allow easy testing and verification of LED driver features. It allows designers to evaluate various features of pulse-width modulation (PWM) control and dynamic power management, with low cost and high performance.

The block diagram for the LM3485LED EVAL board is shown in Figure 1. It is based on a single chip PWM current-mode flyback converter, the LM3485. This is a high efficiency, high performance solution that is suitable for small power applications from 8W to 48W. It has a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 42V, and is able to drive dual strings of LEDs. It also integrates protection functions such as Cycle-by-Cycle Current Limit, Overload Protection (OLP), Short Circuit Protection (SCP), Soft-Start, and Frequency Hopping.

The LM3485LED EVAL board also integrates the NTC thermistor for thermal protection, and two opto-isolated feedbacks for dual strings of LEDs. It also has support for a wide range of output currents, up to 5A. The board features a 2A output current range, adjustable through onboard jumper. In terms of working principle, the LM3485LED EVAL board follows the standard flyback topology, with an auxiliary PWM controller LM5170, a gate driver DRV5032 and auxiliary ICs. A boost diode is used in the reset voltage generator, to generate reset voltage for the PWM controller. The LM3485 uses an external MOSFET to provide power switching, and the driving voltage for the MOSFETs is determined by the auxiliary PWM controller LM5170. The PWM controller generates the appropriate PWM signal based on the feedback from the auxilliary IC and the NTC thermistor. The output voltage of the power supply is regulated by a feedback loop that controls the gate driver which changes the switching period of the MOSFET.
