The LM393QT was built as a specialized comparator device that has a wide range of application spans. The device has two independent precision voltage comparators onboard each with independent inputs and tied outputs. This comparator can be used to detect when a certain voltage threshold is passed, or any other application where a higher accuracy or precision is needed or desired while making a comparison between two analog voltages.

The device was designed to be used with either built-in or externally provided reference voltages. This makes it ideal for simple standalone applications, with the ability to choose between single, dual or multiple comparator functions. Differential input stages, linked to the single output, give high common-mode rejection as well as offset voltage of typically 0.2 mV.

The LM393QT is designed with an open collector output, which has the capability of sinking current from the output to ground, thus aiding in the design of more complex circuits. For added reliability, tighter comparator trip points and fewer false trips, the LM393QT also comes with a built-in hysterisis voltage of typically 0.2 mV.

The working principle of the LM393QT is relatively straight forward. Once supplied with power, the two inputs on the device are compared. The comparator produces an output that is either high or low depending on the voltage relationship between the two inputs. For example, if the voltage on the non-inverting input is higher than the voltage on the inverting input then the output will go low. If the voltage on the non-inverting input is lower than the voltage on the inverting input then the output will go high.
