The LM555-MWC, or Monostable, Astable, and Bistable Multivibrator, is a versatile clock/timing device that has been used for various applications such as precision timing, pulse generation, and frequency modulation. The LM555-MWC is commonly known as a programmable timer or oscillator and is noted for its ability to be programmed to produce a pulse with a specific time period, pulse width, or mark/space ratio.
In the simplest terms, the LM555-MWC can be thought of as an electronic switch that is turned on long enough to do a job and then shut off. The LM555-MWC is capable of producing pulses of a specific time period and/or pulse width. By changing the values of the components (resistor and capacitor) connected to the device, these values can be accurately programmed.
The LM555-MWC has three modes of operation that are determined by two external switches. Each mode has its own set of internal circuitry and functions differently from the other. The modes of operation are monostable, astable and bistable. Monostable means that the circuit produces a single output pulse when triggered and astable means that the circuit produces a continuous output stream of regular pulses with a specific time period. The bistable mode functions as a basic flip-flop and is capable of producing a single output pulse, regardless of the length of the input trigger pulse.
When the external switches are closed the LM555-MWC is placed in the monostable mode and a voltage is applied to the timing capacitor and the comparator thresholds (threshold 1 and threshold 2). The capacitor starts to charge up, which in turn causes the output of the comparator to change. When the voltage across the capacitor reaches the threshold voltage of the comparator, the output of the comparator is changed and the output pin is activated. This output will stay active until the timer capacitor is discharged and the output pin is reset.
In the astable mode, the LM555-MWC is configured as an oscillator. The time period of the oscillator is determined by the values of the capacitor and resistor connected to the device. As in the monostable mode, the voltage across the capacitor is applied to the comparator thresholds and the comparator\'s output changes when the voltage reaches the threshold. The output of the comparator is connected to the clock pin of the oscillator which in turn is connected to the reset pin. The reset input forces the output of the IC to be high or low based on the last state of the output.
The last mode of operation for the LM555-MWC is its bistable mode. This mode works similar to a flip-flop and the output is high when the input is high and low when the input is low. There are no resistors and capacitors connected to the device in this mode and the output of the comparator is connected directly to the clock and reset inputs of the circuit. The output of the circuit will always remain in the same state regardless of the length of the input pulse.
The LM555-MWC is an important device used in a variety of applications including precision timing, pulse generation, and frequency modulation. It is capable of producing pulses of a specific time period and/or pulse width by connecting different values of resistors and capacitors to the device.
