LM556 MWC Application Field and Working Principle
Clock/Timing - Programmable Timers and Oscillators is a broad application field for LM556 MWC, a dual monostable multivibrator which is widely used in timer and oscillator applications. The main working principle of LM556 MWC can be simplified to two transistor triggers interacting with each other.In a dual monostable multivibrator, there are two transistors Q1 and Q2 interconnected through connections R1, R2, and C1, and also, a source of trigger pulses. Transistor Q1 is is set up with its base connected, through a resistor R1, to the source of trigger pulses T1, and with its collector output connected, through a capacitor C1, to the base of transistor Q2. Transistor Q2 has its collector-emitter path connected across the voltage source.In a stable state, transistor Q1 is off, and transistor Q2 is saturated and connecting the output and groundas a closed loop. If a trigger pulse is applied to transistor Q1 at time T0, it turns on and starts charging the capacitor C1 with current flowing through the resistor R1. The current reduces by half in every time constant. The time constant is the product of the resistance and capacitance. After a period of time, when the capacitor has been charged and the voltage across C1 is sufficient, transistor Q2 turns on, connecting the output and ground together as a closed loop. Now, transistor Q1 turns off due to the current through the base decayed to zero. This in turn causes the fault current source in Q2 to drive its collector down, since the capacitor is already charged. Hence, the output of the circuit or multivibrator goes high. After this, the output remains high as long as the capacitor C1 is in discharge mode.In terms of application fields, the LM556 MWC can be applied to numerous applications such as sequencers, timers, pulse generation and oscillators. For example, a wide variety of timing pulses generated for linear ramp generators and time-delay systems benefit from the LM556 MWC due to its ability to form a very stable timing circuit. In addition, the LM556 MWC can be used for timing of signal bursts. It can be used as a simple form of circuit protection from transients and incorrect signal state by delaying its outputs for a period of time equivalent to the capacitor/resistor combination. Furthermore, LM556 MWC can also be used for providing a self-starting signal oscillator that would be able to provide a wide range of clocking signals depending on the components used.In conclusion, LM556 MWC is an ideal dual monostable multivibrator to be used in various applications such as sequencers, timers, pulse generation or oscillators. It has the ability to form stable timing circuit, provide a circuit protection, or even provide a self-starting signal oscillator.
