The LM7372MRX/NOPB is an instrumentation amplifier and buffer amp with a wide range of applications, including industrial, medical, and automotive. Its characteristics of low-noise and low-power operation, coupled with its high input impedance and low output impedance, make it ideal for use in a variety of situations where precision signal conditioning is required.

The LM7372MRX/NOPB is based on the instrumentation amplifier topology, as described in greater detail in AN-196, “Instrumentation Amplifier Basics.” The instrumentation amplifier utilizes two differential inputs, to which each channel’s input signal is applied, as well as a reference signal, which is subtracted from both channels. The difference signal is then multiplied by a gain factor and applied to the output.

At the heart of the LM7372MRX/NOPB is the Fairchild Semiconductor FET-Input Operational Amplifier. This op-amp is the device responsible for producing gain within the input signal. The differential input stage of the amplifier can be set to have any gain from 0 to 7222, depending on the values of the feedback resistors. The gain accuracy of the device is 0.5% at most.

The output stage of the LM7372MRX/NOPB is drive dependent, meaning that the output can range from 0 to 3.2V. This range is set by the power supply voltage; the higher the voltage is, the more headroom the amplifier will have. The output impedance of the device is 5Ω, making it suitable for driving high-impedance loads. The output stage is unity gain stable and has a slew rate of up to 10V/uS. The output is protected from overvoltages with clamping diodes.

In addition to its instrumentation amplifier capabilities, the LM7372MRX/NOPB also acts as a buffer amplifier. This functionality is provided by a unity-gain buffer amplifier stage, which provides a gain of 1 while maintaining low output impedance; that is, the output waveform remains unaltered. The LM7372MRX/NOPB can operate from a single 5V supply and draws a maximum supply current of 20mA. The device is available in three-lead PDIP and SOIC packages and requires only a few external components for proper operation. In addition, a gain control pin is available on the device, allowing for easy gain adjustments without the need for external components.
