PMIC - Thermal ManagementThe LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is a high-performance Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) thermal-management solution. It is designed to provide efficient thermal monitoring and control for Multi-Power System (MPS). The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB offers a comprehensive suite of features to give engineers and designers the flexibility to easily achieve high-end thermal performance with minimal effort. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is integrated with a basic 4-layer heat-sink, which allows the designer to directly connect the LM80CIMT-5/NOPB to a power delivery network (PDN) for its thermal management. In addition, the LM80CIMT-5/NOPB provides thermal balancing, hysteresis control mode and integrated power-on feature - enabling dynamic control of timing and frequency of PMICs. All these features enable high-end thermal-management solutions. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is an efficient thermal-management solution that works with the MPS. It has three individual temperature sensors which can detect temperature directly on the MPS, detecting temperatures up to 130°C with a high resolution of 0.004°C, giving more accurate temperature readings. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is connected to the MPS in two basic configurations. One configuration is an open-loop system, where the LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is connected directly to the MPS, with no other control loop or additional hardware involved. The second configuration is a closed-loop system, whereby the LM80CIMT-5/NOPB is connected to an additional controller, either an external controller or a controller integrated on the MPS. This helps to further hone the temperature readings from the LM80CIMT-5/NOPB and provide more accurate thermal management. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB performs management of the MPS thermal regulation with a set of four distinct methods, each with its own distinct algorithm to determine when cooling needs to be initiated and when shutdown needs to be imposed. The four management methods are throttling, fan management, trip zones and automated speed control. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB’s throttling method applies to both the external and internal cooling of the MPS. It is used to efficiently heat-manage the internal MPS temperature by dynamically limiting the operating speed of the MPS based on temperature feedback from each of the three individual temperature sensors. This method also then dictates fan speed management by doing the same with cooling fans as a way to further protect against overheating. The LM80CIMT-5/NOPB also introduces a trip-zone control feature which allows the chip to quickly switch to a higher or lower frequency and voltage range for a brief period of time, when extreme temperatures arise. This is to help quickly cool the system by providing additional air flow. The innovative LM80CIMT-5/NOPB thermal-management solution is designed to help designers manage their MPS’s thermal-regulatory needs. Its efficient, dynamic thermal-regulation algorithms help ensure that the MPS performs at optimum levels while also protecting the components from overheating and boosting performance with better control of the power delivery network.
