The LMR14006XDDCR is a low-input voltage, monolithic, step-down dc-dc converter that can operate from a 2.7V to 5.5V input and delivers up to 1.3A of continuous output current. It has an internal synchronous rectifier and low-side MOSFETs allowing the device to boost efficiencies up to 95% and providing a very compact solution to power applications with limited space. The device supports various control modes to maximize solution flexibility such as Burst-mode operation, PWM operation, and Forced PWM operation. An optional power good signal is available to indicate when the output reaches the required voltage. A cycle-by-cycle current limit protection, device hiccup mode protection, and thermal shutdown provide robust protection features. This device is suitable for applications including any space-constrained, high-efficiency/low-power design including digital still cameras, cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players.

Working Principle

The LMR14006XDDCR typically starts up into burst mode operation, where the device is disabled until the input voltage rises above a slightly reduced setpoint (94% of Vin).The device comprises a synchronous rectifier, an integrated high-side MOSFET, an integrated low adjustment resistor, a low side MOSFET, and a current sense amplifier. The device automatically switches to PWM mode operation when the switching frequency is higher than 180kHz. The input voltage is compared to a 2.5V reference, and an error amplifier provides the voltage on the Comparator Pin to a PWM oscillator, providing an output frequency of 500kHz maximum. The output voltage is maintained by adjusting the voltage at the Softstart pin and adjusting the slope of the current loop.The current loop is constantly monitored by the current sense amplifier and regulation is limited to the maximum current level set by the external current sense resistor, RCS. The device also offers a power good signal to indicate when the output has reached its set value. Thermal shutdown is provided when the junction temperature exceeds 150°C. The device is protected from overheating by a hiccup mode when the junction temperature exceeds 140°C.
