LMX2331A, or a member of the Timing Systems® product family, is a Clock Generator, PLL, and Frequency Synthesizers consisting of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The device is designed to increase the rate of conversion and reduce the overall power consumption required to perform timing functions. LMX2331A\'s design provides optimum stability and an unbeatable jitter performance in its class.
The LMX2331ATMX\'s applications include, but are not limited to, frequency synthesis and jitter filtering, clock multipliers and dividers, and clock switching. When used as a frequency synthesizer, the output frequency is adjustable over a range of 100 Hz to about 915 MHz by controlling the voltage on the external loop filter. The device can also be used as a jitter filter to dramatically reduce clock jitter from a single or multiple sources. The device includes all the necessary timing elements for combining multiple clocks into one, allowing a single clock to control multiple functions.
The device can be used to perform clock switching, routing, or gating, eliminating the need for external gate ICs or multiplexers. The on-board logic, buffers, and adjustable deadtime control means the LMX2331ATMX can select an input in nanoseconds. The CMOS output can be phase-shifted, allowing the phase of the output clock to be adjusted.
The working principle of the LMX2331ATMX is based on a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The VCO is a high-frequency oscillator whose output frequency is determined by the voltage applied to it. The voltage can be varied by an external loop filter controlled by the device. The device includes a fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL) that uses a dual-modulus prescaler to create the VCO\'s reference frequency from the input clock. The loop filter adjusts the PLL\'s behavior to control the VCO\'s output frequency.
In addition to the fractional-N PLL, the device also includes several other timing elements, including an output divider circuit, a dynamic spectrum spreading noise suppressor, an output buffer and clock switching logic. The output divider circuit divides the VCO\'s output frequency to the desired frequency. The dynamic spectrum spreading noise suppressor is used to reduce the noise floor which results from jitter. Finally, the output buffer amplifies the signal and provides buffering for the clock switching logic and output divider circuit.
