The LMX2531LQX2820E/NOPB is a quad-PLL frequency synthesis and clock generator integrated circuit (IC) from Texas Instruments. It is suitable for a variety of applications that require stable generation of multiple clock frequencies from an input reference clock. The device combines four PLLs and multiple clock multipliers. The integrated PLLs can be used to lock onto an input reference frequency and synthesize output frequencies based on it. Each one of the four PLLs can generate up to 4 outputs of different frequencies and phase relationship.

In addition to its application as a clock generator and frequency synthesizer, the LMX2531LQX2820E/NOPB could be used in any application that requires the synchronization of multiple clock signals. The outputs of the four PLLs are generated based on the same input reference frequency and locked to it. This enables the creation of multiple clock signals that are synchronized in frequency and phase-shift, making the device ideal for applications that require the generation of multiples clocks such as between components in a system for efficient data and control transfer.

The LMX2531LQX2820E/NOPB is based on an advanced digital phase locked loop (PLL) architecture that is easy to use and program using the industry-standard SPI interface. The digital architecture and unlock detection feature, gives the device superior jitter performance and low unit-to-unit variations. The device includes integrated band-gap voltage reference and loop filters, which eliminate the need for external components, reducing overall system cost.

In operation, the reference PLL locks onto the incoming reference clock and achieves a predetermined target frequency. The same input clock is then used by the other three PLLs to generate multiple clock signals. The output frequencies are programmable from 0.81MHz up to 622MHz and the dedicated output multiplier blocks can be used to further increase the frequency range up to 1.7GHz. Independent jitter cleaning and spread-spectrum blocks are also integrated in each one of the four PLL units for maximum performance.
