Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

An aluminum electrolytic capacitor, also referred to as an elcap, discusses the application field and working principle of LNR1J683MSEN in its scope. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most common capacitors in the market. It is a specialized form of electrolytic capacitor, which has an aluminum foil as part of its electrode layers. The aluminum foil is formed into a tightly wound cylinder, known as the anode. The anode is impregnated with a liquid or solid electrolyte, which works as the dielectric.

Working Principle of LNR1J683MSEN: Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the hybrid combination of 3 materials that are dielectric (an electrolyte), separator (Electrically insulated paper) and the capacitor element itself (aluminum foil). A metallic layer is deposited over an oxide film and forms a second layer on both plates for creating a medium between the electric charge and dielectric. The oxide film acts as separator and dielectric simultaneously.

When, charge is applied when voltage is connected to the capacitor leads, the ions and the electric charge are attracted and attach themselves to the two plates. Then, the ions repel each other, creating an electrical field in the capacitor. The negative charges become part of the electrical field, creating a potential energy. The energy stored in the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is proportional to the electric field, charge and voltage applied on the capacitor terminals.

In order to increase the capacitance value, manufacturers usually use more aluminum and electrolyte in the design, which also helps the capacitor to store more energy. The capacitor also has significant self-healing properties, which make it tolerant to heat and other environmental stress.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are simple to design, have high capacitance value, high power and low cost, which makes them one of the most popularly used capacitors in the market.
