Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitor that makes use of an electrolytic solution to store electrical charge. They are made up of two aluminum foils and two dielectric films that form a stack separated by an electrolyte solution. The stack is usually rolled up or wound up, to form a cylinder or flat rectangular surface. With the foil layers facing outwards, the capacitor will have positive and negative terminals on either side of the surface. Generally, it is the positive terminal which is exposed and the negative terminal is covered by the solution.
The LNY2W153MSEJ is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor specifically designed for power electronics applications. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, an electric field is generated within the oxide layer. This causes an electrolytic reaction between the oxide layers and the underlying aluminum, and this reaction causes ions to move towards the electrodes, thus forming a thin oxide layer.
The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can be understood in analogy to a water tank, with the two foil layers representing the walls of it. When the gate valve is opened, the water rises to the level of the lower wall and the capacitance in the capacitor will adjust accordingly. There is also a voltage dependence, meaning that if the voltage is increased, the capacitance will also increase. This capacitance can then be used to store and discharge energy when needed.
