The LP2951DR is a linear voltage regulator that controls the output voltage by regulating the input current. It uses a PNP transistor as an active device to provide a low-dropout feature. The PNP transistor works as an open-collector, or emitter-follower, configuration. In this configuration, the voltage at the output is pulled down to within approximately 300mV of the input voltage. The LP2951DR has an internal reference voltage of 1.25V, which is used to set the output voltage. This voltage is generated from a bandgap reference circuit and trimmed to maintain 1.25V accuracy. The output voltage is set through two external resistors that control the base current of the PNP transistor.
