Working Principle

The LP2960IM-5.0 will provide 5.0V regulated output voltage in response to an input of up to 28V under most operating conditions. The device utilizes an internal P-channel MOSFET as the main output switch. Its output Voltage is regulated by an internal, Band Gap, voltage reference. The reference voltage is compared to an external voltage divider made up of a single resistor and an output feedback resistor. The voltage error signal, which is the difference between the reference voltage and the output of the voltage divider, is amplified and used to control the Gate of the switch. In this way, the output voltage is regulated.

The internal current limiting circuit monitors the output current and will shut down the device when the limit is exceeded. This limits the output current to a level set by a resistor connected to the “Current Limit” pin. In addition to current limit protection, the device also has thermal protection and low battery detect/reset circuits.
